Scarce English Map of New Orleans Following the French and Indian War

Early plan of New Orleans from Philip Pittman’s The present state of the European settlements on the Mississippi ..., 1770.  With table of references identifying 12 major civil and military structures keyed to map.  Captain Pittman was a British army engineer who arrived in West Florida in 1763.  He made many surveying expeditions during a five-year stay along the Gulf Coast and penned the first English work describing French and Spanish possessions in the area.

"The European settlements on the river Mississippi comprehend Louisiana, part of West Florida, and the country of the Illinois. Five years residence as an engineer in those countries, during which time I was chiefly employed in surveying and exploring their interior parts, and an acquaintence with the principal inhabitants enables me to speak with at least as much authority as any author who has hiterto wrote on the same subject. " (Quoted from the Preface of the present work.)
